Contact Improvisation (CI) is a revolutionary, “formless” dance form first proposed and explored by Steve Paxton and others in the 1970′s. Emphasizing dynamic weight sharing with a partner, it has had a profound effect on the modern dance landscape and is considered both a social dance as well as a ground-breaking art form. Contact Improv appeals to both professional and non-professional dancers--and pretty much anyone who likes to move--because of its wide range of potential for human bodies of all types and sizes.

What is Contact Improvisation?

Yeah, but what's it like?

Some have described Contact Improv as a little bit like partner dance, wrestling, movement meditation, partner massage, and gymnastics all combined into a social art form.  Ultimately, CI is an open and on-going inquiry into the body physics of movement in relation to self and other.  In many ways it's up to you to define it on your own terms...and enjoy it in the way that works for you.

Can anyone do it?

Absolutely.

Will it be fun?

Way fun.  And challenging at times.  Afterall, what's fun without a little challenge thrown in to spice things up?

What's it cost?

Prices vary depending on the offering. Typically though, classes average out at about  $16 each. I teach committed series classes so you must sign up for a full series of six classes (that's $98 per series). There are no drop-ins. Trust me...this is the best way to learn.

 

I also teach workshops and intensives so those are priced accordingly.

"Flight School 101"

Fly, Float, Fling, and Fall

OPEN TO ALL LEVELS

When: Tuesdays 5/21-6/25  6pm to 7:30pm

"Flying" is one of Contact Improv's greatest joys. Lifting and being lifted, floating with the support of a partner, a sudden rise and fall in the dynamic exchange of weight. An impulsive leap and a creative catch or deflection...all these things are available to us if we are willing to take a few risks AND learn some basics principles. In this way (along with some effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques) we are able to increase safety, heighten enjoyment, and expand our sense of possibility.

You will learn:

  • specific verbal and non-verbal "flight cues"

  • pathways and strategies for falling/landing

  • effective methods for transferring weight

  • low level vs. "high-in-the-sky" flying

  • multi-axis core connection and inversion

  • plus many more helpful hints and approaches for ease and exhilaration

This class series is only offered once a year so be sure to be there if you've been yearning to develop and grow in this area.

 

All levels of experience are welcome. You can choose your engagement level at anytime or totally refuse a particular activity. You are always at choice in any of my classes!

What do I wear, need to bring to class, etc.?

Please come to class wearing loose, comfortable clothing that you can move in.  Jeans, belts, anything with buttons, jewlery, and such are not recommended.  Water is good.  So is your curiosity and willingness to try new things.  We dance barefoot.
